Sankofa Development – Bronzeville (3rd Ward)

Sankofa is a transformative and community-centered housing initiative by Sunshine Management in collaboration with the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning & Development. Named after the West African concept “Sankofa,” which means “to go back and reclaim it,” the project draws from history to create pathways to homeownership, equity, and generational wealth for historically excluded communities in Chicago’s South Side.
Vision for Project
The project aims to restore homeownership in a historically disinvested neighborhood while preserving Bronzeville’s cultural legacy. Designed to serve working families, it promotes intergenerational stability and wealth —building through attainable, income-generating housing models and inclusive economic participation— 85%+ of contractors and vendors are MWBE-certified.
